Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark: How development has disappeared from today’s ‘development’ discourse

ÖFSE Development Lecture Nr. 7

mit Ha-Joon Chang (Department of Economics, University of Cambridge)

The 'productive' side was central in traditional development economics where developmentwas seen as being largely about the transformation of the productive structure, with an important role played by industrialization in this process, and the social transformations resulting from this. But this side has become increasingly forgotten during the past three decades. In this Lecture, Ha-Joon Chang analyzes the use of the term 'development' in some of today's key 'development' discourses- the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, the Doha Development Agenda of the World Trade Organization, and micro-finance.
