Ways to Take Action Against Child Labour: Fair Wages and Fair Procurement
The target of ending child labour by the end of 2025 (SDG 8.7) has not been met. According to the latest estimates, 138 million children and underage youth worldwide are affected by child labour (ILO, UNICEF). The main causes are poverty, a lack of access to quality education and unfair supply chains. There are calls for binding rules against child labour, whilst funding for international cooperation is being cut.
To mark Decent Work Day on 7 October, we are exploring concrete ways to tackle child labour, particularly with regard to fair wages for workers in the Global South and fair procurement in the Global North. Moreover, we will discuss the necessary next steps and synergies in the fight against child labour.
Roman David-Freihsl (City of Vienna), Rafael Furtado Fonseca (COOMAP), Bernhard Tröster and Simela Papatheophilou (both ÖFSE) will join the discussion. Anna Mago (Fairtrade Austria) will moderate the discussion
